None of what I write about am I perfect at. In fact, I often write as a reminder for myself, in addition to my desire to help other people. Writing about things keeps me honest with myself and serves as a refresher that I am a work in progress. This article is about judging other people, something I’ve become much better at not doing. Clearly, I still have a way to go.
I found myself with a strong dislike for lunch ladies. Not just lunch ladies, but the concept of lunch ladies. There are so many children with different “disorders”. Now I practice a diet of fasting and “nutritarian” style eating. This is what leaves me with a dislike of the concept of lunch ladies. This is because I know what we are feeding our children in school and, for the most part, it as absolute garbage. Pizza counts as a vegetable because of the “tomato” sauce on there? Really?
Lunch ladies are nice a lot of the time. When I see them in action, however, I tend to cringe and think about how “criminal” they are. They feed our kids such processed garbage. I found myself in this situation the other day, but had to take a step back.
You see, one of my responsibilities where I work is to maintain vending machines. This is what I happened to be doing the other morning when I saw the lunch lady preparing the disgusting lunch for the children. Meanwhile, I stock the machines full of chips, chocolate, sugar, and now trail mix and peanuts (a change in the healthy direction I made for our machines). As I walked by and rolled my eyes in disgust, I realized I was carrying chocolate and sweets by the nice lunch lady. I had just finished judging her while I did the same thing.
Oops. Now, there are different ways to view this. People are paying extra for a “treat” vs this is the food that so many people depend on. Blah blah blah. I can put whatever pretty twist on it that I want. The fact is, that if I choose to put those things in the machines then I am doing the same thing. Sure, I added some healthier options to the machines. I also realize that today, people are more apt to buy sweets and sugar than they are to buy healthy foods (many people). Now, I don’t fall into that camp, but so many do because they don’t know what those unhealthy foods are really doing to them.
So I had to take a step back and realize what I was thinking while doing the same thing. I also realize that some food is better than no food (starvation). That is, unless we’re practicing a controlled fast.
So, I need to continue working on not judging others.
In the meantime, to all the well-intentioned lunch ladies out there who just aim to make sure nobody goes hungry, my deepest apologizes.
