Here’s a story on how a couple of friends and Fooducate changed my life forever, and how you can change yours too.
“Ha!” I laughed, watching a couple of people eat “healthy” during lunch break. Five years ago my lunch consisted of the typical American diet. My main course a sandwich with genetically modified bread, meat from who knows where, and cheese from whatever source. Then I’d enjoy Dunkaroos. Next, Gushers. And, of course, “fruit” snacks.
Meanwhile, these two much smarter co-workers would take out their phones and talk about the “grades” of the products they ate for lunch. They’d talk about how this was an “A,” or this was a “B.” My curiosity peaked, and I had to download this application. Enter, Fooducate (check out the app here).
I began scanning my lunch items in front of the staff, competing with myself to see the worst grade I could get. “Gushers, D! Fruit Snacks, D+!” I was proud of myself and making everybody laugh. It was funny until I saw why those grades were so bad.
Let’s take, for instance, what was in the “Fruit” Gushers, according to Fooducate. Way more sugar than necessary. There’s trans-fat (despite the package saying 0). Next are controversial artificial colors and several ingredients to make them highly processed. Finally, there’s juice concentrate (more sugar) and a host of other dangerous items. Clicking on any of these items lists why they were so bad.
All this scanning got me thinking about how unhealthy I was on the inside, despite my slim stature. It only took until I scanned my hearty PB&J Uncrustable before I knew eating junk was over for me. “Duck feathers & human hair in here?” Wait, what? That’s right. According to Fooducate:
“L-cysteine, found in this product, is an additive made from duck feathers or human hair… used as a dough conditioner and to extend shelf life.
There are synthetic versions made from non-animal parts. These are more expensive but well worth it for consumers who do not want duck feathers or human hair in their food. Check the label.
Or better yet, avoid this needless additive…”
Look, now I know that something is going to take down every one of us one day, but I’d seen enough of what I was putting inside of myself. It was enough for me to go through my entire kitchen and scan every single item. I threw away anything that wasn’t a B or better and anything that contained harmful additives.
I no longer use the Fooducate App because I understand what real food is and that food is for fuel. Some laugh at me (more when I fast), the same way I laughed at the young men who understood what their bodies need.
“If I’m going to die, I’m going to die happy.” Not of a massive heart attack, you won’t. Or thirty years too young, with your children and grandchildren begging for one more day with you. “Eating healthy is too expensive.” No more than a triple bypass, and other medical bills associated with an unhealthy lifestyle.
It doesn’t matter the excuse. You can choose the path of your future. It starts with your choice of what to make a part of yourself (the foods you eat). Whatever your choice, choose wise, and live happily.
